A Handmade Prison

Oh how I’d love to Wrap my arms around you Not in a loving way But in a way that would leave you breathless Like a sardine out of its can Would you like that? Would you like to be salmon served in Japan? Would that make you a man or is that not your plan? Although, months ago Things made no sense I was slow with nowhere to go You came to my funeral and sat in front row Now I’m tense for you smiled At the expense of my bones And the pain that ran through them Now they’re dry, bone dry Cold as stones I’m kneeling, all alone and I try To forgive the sweet salmon you are I look up to the sky And I know that I’d love to Leave you on a patch of cement Ladies and gents, here is a man with no plan A fish out of water, dear old Dan I’d charge a fee of two cents To see you cry And a five-dollar bill Just to see you try.

A Sonnet of an Angry Woman

My husband stole milk from the neighbour's farm, He told me that I ask him for too much. I told him that I'd cause him raw harm, Now he retracts at the threat of my touch. My husband didn't come home for the night, He left the milk on the doorstep to rot. He and his pals went to grab a quick bite, Between smokes and beer chugs he forgot. This morning we ate dry cereal and bran, Because my husband is a lazy old man.

The Ten Stages of Exam Preparation

Stage 1: Indifference Upon receiving your exam schedule, you divide your time accordingly, maybe even writing a little study schedule for yourself. The world is your oyster. You feel indifferent towards your schedule, as exam time has not yet begun. You know that you have all the time in the world to start preparing. Stage 2: Determination As exam time creeps up on you, you start preparing your notes and looking over lectures, maybe doing some practice exams. You are determined to ace these finals and you know that you will do your very best. Stage 3: Anxiety You slowly start to realize that the amount of work you still have left to do is disproportional to the few days left that you have before the exam. The failure of your self made study schedule is revealed. You start feeling pangs of anxiety, maybe even calculating how badly you can do on the exam so that you don't fail the course. Stage 4: Denial You begin falsely assuring yourself that there isn't that much to ...

Things I Learned in Freshman Year

In high school, the "university experience" was mystical. It was something that was on everyone's tongues throughout senior year. We'd fantasize about the parties we'd attend, the friends we'd meet, and the freedom we'd have away from public education. We'd go to university fairs and university representatives would come to our high school, shoving colourful pamphlets in our faces featuring smiling students sitting in poppy fields with books in their hands. University. A new chapter in my life. A step into adulthood. And it is nothing as I expected it to be, nothing like the candied university booklets I received by the dozen in high school. Here are some raw facts about university life, and the things I learned during my freshman year: The "university experience" is mostly one of cramming for tests and exams. In high school, you may have had a test every now and then, and exam periods once during a 5-month semester. In university, you ha...

Thirst For Destruction (Of The Self)

I've only seen two types of people in this world. Sometimes they are both, some are more extreme than others, and some interchange. Essentially, a (wo)man can only be in one of two states: a state of heightened esteem, to the point of arrogance; or a state of complete submission and weakness. This state of being eventually shapes a man's character, for a man who leans too much on cowardice becomes a coward, and the man who is consistently in a state of arrogance becomes an arrogant man- the state becomes embedded in his personality. How do we know that a man can only be in one of two states? When a man faces a dangerous or difficult situation, he rarely takes responsibility for himself, for this goes against the man's natural need for survival. Taking responsibility involves taking a risk of being rejected or hurt. The man's natural instinct, therefore, is to tackle the situation in a way so that his ego is protected. For example, when coming across a bear, the arrogant...

Two Can Dine

I dreamt last night that we were sipping wine That you climbed for me up the grape vine My hair a mess and fingers entwined Plans for brunch at two-can-dine You planted kisses on my feet Like little candies, sticky sweet Semi smiles beneath the sheet Laughs were heard across the street Everything was out of place I wasn't even hard to chase You ripped too easily through the lace But I couldn't say no to that face I felt a raw chunk of emotion Didn't care about love's devotion Hollow heart and heated motion Was the abyss of the ocean Two-can-dine and two can lie So we both thought of an alibi You sucked the flower 'til it ran dry I never wished to say good-bye But you left to go back to your lover Of course I knew you had another So I crawled home to my mother Took three days for me to recover I wish you'd appear every night In my mind as I shut the light Then one day, I just might See your real fa...

Lonely Eyes

There were two people at the beginning of time- a man and a woman. They were cold to each other. They slept on opposite sides of the creek and each one of them scavenged for food on their own. There was an abundance of plants and animals that they could choose from. Although they were young, they suffered. They knew no other life but this one. They settled in this lonely paradise, accepting it as their only reality. They didn’t communicate with each other because they were too scared to. People are wild and unpredictable. They can be boiling teakettles one day and sanguine sloths the next. It is indisputably easier to avoid the complexities of human nature entirely.             One day, a heavy storm hit the land, and the man and woman huddled together beneath the leafiest tree they could find. The man took the woman’s hand and breathed on it, making it warm. They looked into ea...
